CLEO HAROLD BATTEN - Cleo Harold Batten, son of Nettie Moore Batten and Forrest Albert Batten, was born at Yutan, Ne, Sept. 28, 1907, and departed this life on, Jan. 17, 1984, at his home near Gravity, Iowa at the age of 76 years, 3 months, and 20 days.
At an early age, he and his parents and sister moved from Nebraska to the Gravity area where he attended school. He was baptized at the Christian Church March 27, 1921.
On May 19, 1931, he was united in marriage to Ofie Marie Wolfe of Fleming, Co. They resided most of their married life, engaged in farming, in the Gravity vicinity, except for a short time in Colorado. To this union four children were born; Robert Dean, Bernard Lynn, Clark Wayne, and Stephen Ray.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and his oldest son, Robert.
Left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Ofie; daughter-in-law, Barbara; three sons, Bernard and wife Verna of Grand Island; Clark and wife Marilyn; Steve and wife Carol, all of Clarinda; eight grandchildren, Dennis and wife Janice; Denise and husband, Les Adair; Curtis, Craig and wife Mary, Julie, Michael, Sarah, and Randy; One great-grandson, Jesse Adair; and one sister, Adda Dickerson of Denver, Co; also a host of nieces and nephews.
He was a kind and considerate husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services were held Jan. 20 at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, Ia, with Rev. Roger Charley officiating. Mary Anderson was organist and Jim McAlpin soloist. Casket bearers were Dick Guilliatt, Gary Spring, Larry Stamps, Delmar Derry, Keith Wright and Orville Marsh. Honorary pallbearers were: Elsey Guilliatt, Dean Derry, Lawrence Ingram, Verle Wright, Gilbert Yearous, Ray Stamps, Harold Bailey, Dean Johnson, Johnny Hiatt and Willard Marsh.
Burial was in the Washington Cemetery at Gravity, Ia.
