Bates Rites Wednesday in Hammond

Hamond -- Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday for Mrs. Alyne Smith Bates, 42, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at her home near here Monday afternoon.

The body will be at the chapel after 5 p.m. today.

According to Dr. Charles R. Genovese, parish coroner, Mrs. Bates shot herself with a .410 gauge shotgun just above the heart. She died instantly, the coroner said.

Mrs. Bates was alone in the house, located on Morris Road northeast of Hammond, Dr. Genevese said. Her body was found by her children when they returned home from school.

The time of death was placed at about 2 p.m..

Mrs Bates, a native of Franklinton, is survived by her husband, Henry F. Bates of Hammond; her father, Archie Smith of Franklinton; one son, Henry F. Bates Jr. of Hammond; four daughters, Mrs. Mildred Harper, Mrs. Elaine Culbreath, Joyce and Floyce Bates, all of Hammond; two sisters, Mrs. Allie Creel of Ponchatoula and Mrs. Fordia Bates of Franklinton; two brothers, Wesley and Y. V. Smith, both of Franklinton, and five grandchildren.
