Virgil worked for his father hauling freight, worked on farms, and in a blacksmith shop. In 1947 Virgil went into ranching. In 1950 they bought a place 1 1/2 miles south of Bassett. In 1971 he purchased land and developed it in to irrigated corn land. Cattle was his main business, but he was also an order buyer for cattle, which he enjoyed.
Neva was the last of the Seth Bates family in Nebraska.
