Doris E. Bates of Sonora died Saturday at a Soulsbyville care home. She was 90.
She was born in Egan, Texas, and had lived in Sonora for 10 years.
Her parents were Newton and Mary Chism and she was the 12th of 14 children. She worked for Singer Co. for more than 20 years.
She moved from Vista, San Diego County, to Sonora in 1994. She attended Sierra
Bible Church before her health kept her at home.
Her family said she loved to sew and dance.
She is survived by her daughters, Jan Smith and Ava Berryhill, both of Sonora,
Gaye Robinson of Layton, Utah, and Pamela Garman of Escondido, San Diego County; a brother, Lester Chism of Sentinel, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; 22
great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond F. Brown; her second
husband, Robert Bates; and a daughter, Mary Ann Loew.
