Charles Holland Bates

Charles Holland Bates, for many years in the concert and theatrical profession, died at the Bassett hospital, Cooperstown Wednesday, may 29th, after an illness of about three weeks.
He was a son of Byron L. and Alda Tripp Bates and was born in Milford August 4, 1872.
Mr. Bates was a solo tenor with the productions of Augustin Daly in the Daly Theatres in New York city and London. He was associated with many of the earlier stars of the New York stage, including Maxine Elliott, mabelle Gilman, James J. Powers, Ada Rehan, and others. Later he was a memer of a quartet, which was highly regarded in the world of vaudeville.
In 1917, he retired from the stage and returned to the place of his birth where he has since resided. One of his principal interest in his later years was the Milford library.
A funeral service was held at the Presbyterian church, Saturday at 2 p.m., the Rev. Jospeh C. Fields conducting the services. W.C. McRorie, Fred Ashcraft, Ellery R. Barney, and L.C. Colburn were the bearers.
Fred Rover of Brooklyn, who had been a member of the quartet for many years with mr. Bates was in attendance at the services and sang two of Mr. Bates' favorite hymns. Burial was in the Milford cemetery.
He is survived by two brothers, R.D. Bates of Milford and Byron R. Bates of Oneonta.
