Son of the late Robert Midgette and Margaret Dean Simpson Bateman, he graduated from Bath High School in 1942. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII patricipating in action at Iwo Jima. He was awarded two Purple Hearts. He attended East Carolina Teachers' College and later returned to Beaufort County to tend the family farm. He married Julia Rebecca "Becky" Elks on November 18, 1953. He was survived by his wife; two sons, Allen Holland Bateman, Jr., and his wife Carlene, and James Parker Bateman and his wife Jane; a daughter, Bettye Bateman; a sister, Sybil Pipho; six grandchildren, Sarah Bateman Whitfield, Mary Bateman Moon, Samuel Bateman, Rachel Bateman, Meredith Bateman Locklear and Parker Bateman; seven great-grandchildren; and an extended family of relatives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Judson Bateman, Robert Bateman, Daniel Bateman and Billie Bateman; and three sisters, Nannie Maude Bateman, Emily Brickhouse and Lillie Patterson. His funeral was held December 13, 2009, with The Rev. Steven Pipho officiating. His burial was held with military honors.
