William Frederick Bateman, 80, of Austin, Texas, ran out of projects and died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006. He was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Salina, to Charles and Rozella Fennell Bateman. After graduating from high school in New Kensington, Bill enlisted and was based at Pampa Army Air Field as World War II ended. He later graduated from Pennsylvania State University, and joined the Air Force. He worked as a physicist at Applied Research Laboratory at University of Texas from 1954-1981, except for some employment at Tracor. After retirement, he always had one or more projects to do. Survivors include a son, Mark R. Bateman, of Mountain View, Calif.; sister, Bernice Harshberger and her husband, Wayne, of Beaufort, N.C.; brother-in-law, Jack K. Fowler; several nieces and nephews; and longtime Austin friends, Gene Mikeska and Jean Cornelius. Bill's parents and other siblings, Faye Fowler and Charles O. Bateman Jr., preceded him in death. Mr. Bateman's family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in West View Cemetery, Avonmore, for a memorial service and interment.
