DRUNKEN PRISONER KILLS WARDEN AND TRUSTY

Mount Holly, N. J., November 5 -- Deputy Warden W. Harry King, of the Burlington County jail, and Charles Vernon Bartlett, a "trusty" were beaten to death with a stove poker in the jail today by Harry Asay, a prisoner, who was said to be suffering from delirium tremens. King was killed when he went to Asay's cell to give him medicine prescribed by the jail physician.

Than rushing from the cell, Asay encountered Bartlett in the jail kitchen, beating him so severely that he died tonight. Another "trusty" who was in the kitchen, also was attacked but he managed to escape before the crazed man could reach him with the poker. Asay than fled to the jail yard and tried to scale a twenty-foot wall. Falling, he armed himself with an axe and an iron pipe, threatening Joseph Jones, a colored prisoner, who had grappled with him in jail. He was subdued a few minutes later and again locked up.

Asay, a scrap iron dealer of Burlington, was arrested Wednesday night for drunkenness and sentenced to a month in jail. Shortly after being locked up he developed delirium tremens and was placed under the care of prison physician. He was being given medicine at regular intervals. King, who was 60 years old, had been to his cell several times during the morning.
