Born in Queens, N.Y., on Oct. 9, 1905, Elsie graduated in 1924 from Bryant and Stratton College, Providence, R.I., with a bachelor's degree in secretarial science. The College later became part of Brown University. She was among the new generation of female secretaries, a field previously held only by men. She was employed by odd-lots stockbroker, C.L. Vaughn, until the stock market crashed in 1929.
In 1931, Elsie married Robert S. Asbury, moving to Pittsburgh, Detroit, and finally, to Baton Rouge, where he was employed by Ethyl Corp. Elsie was a 61-year member of First United Methodist Church and the Tharseon Sunday School class. She was a longtime member of Chapter W of P.E.O., the Woman's Club, Lampion Study Club and Alpha Xi Delta.
Elsie was preceded in death by Robert, her husband of 68 years; parents, Victor and Esther Barrowman; brother, Arthur Barrowman; and sisters, Gertrude Pitts and Clara Page.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Goetzman; and grandchildren, Jann Goetzmann of Charlottesville, Va., W. Roland Goetzmann, Jr., of Greenville, S.C., and Jill Brashier and her husband, Heath, of Baton Rouge.
Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., until funeral service conducted by the Rev. Michael Hammett. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd.
