Frances Armiger Webb Barnes was the dau of Edward Armiger Webb and his wife Mary Crawley of Portsmouth, Virginia. Her father died in Portsmouth in 1832 and Frances husband, William George Cowling of Nansemond Co died about 1838, leaving Frances a widow with two young children. In 1840 Frances and her children were living with her widowed mother in Portsmouth. In 1848 she married her former husband's friend, John C. Barnes. After John died in the war Frances went with her son Walter to live in Goldsboro, Wayne Co, NC where Walter's grandfather probably died.
