The Holton Recorder, February 20, 1919:
John F. Barnes was born in Jackson county, Mo., Jan. 11, 1840, and died in Holton Feb. 12, 1919, aged 79 years, 1 month and 1 day. He lived in Jackson county, Mo., until he was 5 years old, when the family moved to Buchanan county, where he lived until about 4 years ago, when he came to make his home with his son, Jas. H. Barnes, who lived near Circleville, this county, until last fall, when the family came to Holton to make their home. Brother Barnes was married Aug. 23, 1860, to Rebecca Keith, who preceded him to the better land March 28, 1875. He was the father of eight children, four of whom are still living, viz: Jas. H., born Nov. 3, 1862; Sarah E., born Oct. 9, 1864; Aaron E., born Nov. 14, 1869, and Mary A., born April 5, 1872. He has 40 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, all living. Brother Barnes was a farmer in Buchannan county, Mo., practically all his life. Was justice of the peace for 24 years in Buchannan county, Mo. The first of January, 1865, he enlisted in the federal army and served until the close of the war. He was a member of the G.A.R., at DeKalb, Mo. On January 28, 1877, Mr. Barnes married his second wife, who died in September, 1914 …. Burial was made in the Holton cemetery.
