Forrest "Rex" Barnes, 85, Holton, died March 13, 2008, at his home. He was born Sept. 1, 1922, in Topeka, the son of James and Anna Jenkins Barnes. He attended Holton schools and had lived in the Holton area all of his life. Mr. Barnes enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in October 1942 during World War II and was an airplane and engine mechanic crew chief. He was honorably discharged in February 1946. He later worked for Utterback Motors in Holton as a car salesman until he purchased the Pontiac Buick AMC Jeep dealership, which became Rex Barnes Motors in Holton. He also owned Rex Barnes Used Motors in Topeka. He later sold the dealership and operated a used car lot on South U.S. Highway 75 until retirement. He was a member of VFW Post 1367 in Holton. He married Irene Frances Armstrong on Jan. 15, 1943, in Victoria, Texas. She died Nov. 9, 1988. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Rexanna Ray Sission; a sister, Virginia Hune; a brother, Bob Barnes; and a great-grandson Justin Nott. Survivors include a son, Jay Barnes and wife Cathy, Ozawkie; a brother-in-law, Dean Hune, Holton; four grandchildren, Lora Ray Myers, Olathe, Kelly Ray, Phoenix, Ariz., and Hayley and Jayme Barnes, both of Ozawkie; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. March 18 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 17 at the funeral home.
