Montague Man Killed by Car
J. D. BARNES, 74, long time resident of Montague County and a resident of the town of Montague, was killed Friday morning, Nov. 17, near his home, when struck by a car driven by WELDON MCCARLEY of Nocona. Funeral services were held at the Montague cemetery Saturday, conducted by Rev. WALKER of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. JOHNNY COX of the Montague Baptist Church, arranged by J. B. March undertaking. Investigation disclosed the accident was unavoidable. Mr. Barnes was driving some cattle, one ran into front of the car and Mr. Barnes started after it, in attempting to avoid the cow, Mr. McCarley did not see Mr. Barnes in time to avoid striking him. … Mr. Barnes was the father of Mrs. ORA TURNER, employed at the Wichita Falls tax collection office. He was a brother-in-law of W. G. BRALLEY, former sheriff of Wichita County, and of Miss DORA CORNITT of Wichita Falls. Other survivors include his widow and two daughters, Mrs. WILLARD SHACKELFORD and Mrs. ETHEL LEATHERWOOD. Pallbearers were JESSE BARNES, FLOYD BARNES, JEWEL HUNTER, J. GIPSON, LUTHER MILLER and BRYAN THOMAS. Flowergirls were FLORA THOMAS, NELL THOMAS, WILLIE MAE BRADLEY, MAURINE BRADLEY, INEZ WOOD, INETA WOOD and RUBY MARIE WALKER.
