FAYETTEVILLE - Retired U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Lauren Valentine Barnes, 91, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, in his home.
He retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years, serving in World War II and in the Korean War. He later retired from the Civil Service after 16 years.
Funeral services will be held at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Reeves Funeral Home chapel in Hope Mills. Burial will follow at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake. The family will recieve friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at Reeves Funeral Home.
Mr. Barnes leaves behind his wife, Thelma P. Barnes; children, Dolores B. Priest of Fayetteville and Sue B. King of Godwin; grandchildren, Lauren D. Faircloth of Fayetteville, Morgan A. Crabb of Raleigh and James M. Crabb of Fairfax, Va.; and great-grandchildren, Scott B. Faircloth and Emily D. Faircloth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
