Alvin Robert Barlow, age 89, our father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on Nov. 6, 2002 at St. Joseph Villa in Salt Lake City.

He was born September 5, 1913 to Altheron and Mary Moss Barlow in Centerfield, Sanpete County, Utah and attended local schools in Centerfield and Gunnison. Alvin enjoyed participating in school activities and varsity sports while attending Gunnison Valley High School. After graduation, he and his father co-owned Barlow Service, a grocery and gasoline business in Centerfield which they operated for many years.

He married Ruth Peterson, a school teacher at Centerfield Elementary School, on June 29, 1936 in the Manti LDS Temple. They had three children: Jane (Lee) Sorenson, Stansbury Park, Utah, Brent (Susan) Barlow, Orem, Utah, and Karen (Lance) Schneider, Chandler, Arizona.

Alvin served in the U.S. Army during World War II and also was active in civic and religious affairs in the community. He was a member of the Gunnison Valley Lion's Club and was honored as "Father of the Year" in Gunnison Valley. He served as Bishop of the Centerfield LDS Ward from 1949-1957 and President of the Gunnison LDS Stake from 1957-1963. He and Ruth later moved to Hunter, Utah where he worked as a security guard and then as a director of sessions in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. After Ruth passed away, Alvin moved to Orem, Utah and was employed as a supervisor at Deseret Industries in Provo, Utah.

Alvin enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading and writing poetry during his later years. Many of his poems have been enjoyed by others, including his poem, "One Rose" written in memory of his wife and sweetheart, Ruth.

Survivors include his three children, three sisters, Cleo Rawlings, Veone Hendrickson, and Mary Starley; twelve grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a brother, Alvin, and four sisters, Erma, Thelma, Doris, and Maxine.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the Valley View Funeral Home Chapel, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah. The family will receive friends at a viewing from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the services at Valley View Funeral Home.
