Sandra Marie Barela, 49, a resident of Las Vegas, N.M., passed away at St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe on Sunday following an extended illness.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Toni Barela Herrera; a brother, Danny Barela Jr; and a great-grandmother, Juanita Olivas.
She is survived by two sons: Robert "Tono" Vigil and wife Renee of Santa Fe, N.M. and Nico Barela and Megan of Las Vegas, N.M.; two sisters: Leona Herrera of Las Vegas, N.M. and Lisa Garduño and husband Paul of Las Vegas, N.M.; one brother, Silverio Herrera and wife Anna of Las Vegas, N.M.; a special aunt, Mary Griego of Las Vegas, N.M.; half-brothers: Chris Barela and fiancé Elsie Gallegos and Mark Barela and Michelle all of Las Vegas, N.M.; a half-sister, Brenda Esquibel and husband James of Amarillo, Texas; four grandchildren: Jarid Vigil, Savannah Sanchez, and Monique Lovato all of Santa Fe, N.M. and Anthony Vigil of Las Vegas, N.M.; three nephews: Brad Herrera and wife Erica of Tecolote, N.M., Brandon and Lauren Garduño both of Las Vegas, N.M.; a niece, Maria Herrera of Las Cruces, N.M. and many other relatives.
She was born in Las Vegas, N.M. on July 30, 1959 to Toni Barela-Herrera and Dan Barela.
She worked as a supervisor for Hughes Aircraft in California for several years and returned to Las Vegas where she had a life long career as a certified nursing assistant taking pride in her work and patient care. Her nursing experience came from working at the New Mexico State Hospital in Las Vegas. She worked for a contract nursing agency and traveled and worked in hospitals in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Española, and Los Alamos, N.M.. She loved to do arts and crafts and cook. She had a good sense of humor.
A visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. until 4p.m. from St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd.
All services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary this evening at 7 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Thursdays at 9 a.m. The interment will follow in Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery in Sapello, N.M.
