Birth: Feb. 19, 1853
Death: Nov., 1941

Another of Madison county's most distinguished citizens passed this Wednesday morning with the death of John O. Bare, after an illness of four weeks. He was 88 years of age.

Mr. Bare was the dean of Winterset's business men, having operated his grocery store in the Bare block, southeast corner of the square, continuously since 1890, more than half a century. He held the distinction of having operated the first automobile service station between Des Moines and Omaha. It was installed in the outside wall of his grocery building shortly after 1905. He was one of Winterset's pioneer motorists.

John Osborn Bare was a native of Indiana where he was born Feb. 19, 1853, the son of Robert and Triphineia Bare. As a child he came with his parents to Iowa, and settled near Pleasantville, in Warren county, where he was reared. He was married there to Elizabeth McCormick. They moved to a farm just across the line in Adair county, spending a year and a half there, before moving to Winterset. After a few years in Winterset, they moved to South Dakota, where he farmed from 1883 until 1889. In the latter year he returned to Winterset, and in 1890 he went into business in the place he continuously operated until the time of his death.

Mr. Bare's wife died in 1920. He is survived by one son, Ben Bare of Winterset; one grandson, Maj. Robert Bare of the U.S. Marine corps, based at Quantico, Va.; one great granddaughter; three brothers, Dr. E. A. Bare of Pleasantville, O. N. Bare of Pleasantville, William Fosher of Estherville; and a sister, Mrs. Mamie Wallis of Oregon.
