ST. ANTHONY – Matha LaVon Banta, 79, died May 6, 1999, at her home near St. Anthony of leukemia.
She was born April 24, 1920, at Blackfoot, to Elmer Glee Manwill and Hazel Blanch Hancock Manwill. She grew up in Payson, Utah, where she graduated from Payson High School.
On Sept. 16, 1939, she married to Stanley Orville Banta at Long Beach, Calif. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They lived in the South Pacific (while her husband was in the Navy); Vallejo, Calif.; Sultan, Wash.; Payson, Utah; Mud Lake, Idaho; West Yellowstone, Mont.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Rock Springs, Wyo.; Los Angeles, Calif.; and they finally moved to St. Anthony in 1984. Her husband died April 14, 1999.
An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in numerous stake and ward positions, including the Scouting program. She was a member of the Lady Lions, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She also worked for 12 years as a Foster Grandparent ad the state Juvenile Corrections Center near St. Anthony.
Survivors include her children, Stanley Roy "Butch" (Karen) Banta of Kingman, Ariz., Barbara Ann (Lou) Hale of Idaho Falls, Joe E. (Barbara) Banta of Baton Rouge, La., Patricia (Dee) Young, and Sandee Banta, both of St. Anthony, Wesley (Sherry) Banta of Star Valley, Wyo.; a sister, Laura Marie McBeth of Ogden, Utah; a brother, Warren Manwill of Salt Lake City, Utah; 25 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jay Banta, in August 1998; two brothers; and one sister.
Funeral services will be Monday at noon at the St. Anthony LDS Stake Center with Bishop Bart Andreason officiating. Friends may visit at Bidwell Funeral Home in St. Anthony Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and at the church Monday for one hour before the time of the services. Burial will be in the Wilford Cemetary.
