Philip Bansbach was only 17 years old when he left Germany and immigrated to the United States. His older brother, Anton Bansbach, and older sister, Eva (Sister Mary Aloysia) had previously migrated to the U.S.

It is unknown how Philip was able to obtain employment as a Clerk at the B Herders Book Store (a Catholic Supply Store) but he remained employed there for the remainder of his life, eventually becoming Bookkeeper.

He was a short man, 5”3 and very thin. He had brown hair and wore a goatee beard. He met Helen Blum and they married at St. Peters and Paul Catholic Church in 1891. Philip loved to sing and joined the German Singers Verein. He also sang in the choir at St. Francis de Sales, under Professor Bauer, one of the more famous directors in the area at this time.

When he needed more room for his growing family, they moved from the City to 4304 Exeter in Shrewsbury, MO, one of the first suburbs of St. Louis. He became Choir Director at St. Michael’s Church. When the Organist was sick, his daughter, Margaret, would play the organ. (the house on Exeter was destroyed to make way for Interstate 44)

He did everything in his power to provide for his family. His sons went to Conception College for high school and the girls went to St. Elizabeth Academy. Since he had little education himself, he valued education. He had a strong Catholic faith.

He died in 1941 from complications of pneumonia following a surgery.
