Banks, Alexander R.--Born, Allegheny City, Pa., Aug. 9, 1835; son of Rev. Joseph and Mary (Roseburg) Banks; married Jennie S. Roseburg, Allegheny Co., Pa., April 23, 1863; to Kansas April 3, 1855; to Topeka, 1887; was an Indian trader, and a soldier; has been special examiner, U.S. Bureau of Pensions for past 25 years. Res.: 705 Fillmore.

Captain Alexander Banks (left) served as provost marshal of the Southern District of Kansas in 1863, and in that role negotiated with Confederate guerrilla leader William Clarke Quantrill for the surrender of the Eldridge Hotel during the raid on Lawrence, Kansas in August 1863.
