Mrs. Bankston was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma on December 25, 1924.
She married the love of her life, Gene C. Bankston, on August 2, 1943. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage in August of this year.
Mrs. Bankston helped put her husband through college and waited for him while he served in World War II.
Mrs. Bankston and her husband had two children, Ron and Karen.
Her husband's career took them to many cities.
She made homes for them in Elk City, Oklahoma, Kilgore, Texas, Oklahoma City, Fairlawn, New Jersey, The Hague, Netherlands, Lafayette, Louisiana, Westport, Connecticut, London, England, and finally in Houston.
Mrs. Bankston lived a life of caring and service.
She was very active in her church, volunteer and charity work (including United Methodist Women, PEO, and the Junior League), golfing, sewing and gardening.
However, her favorite activity was time spent with her three grandchildren, Tom, Laura, and Keith.
She loved them so much and was a central and vital part of their lives. In turn, they adored her.
Mrs. Bankston was predeceased by her parents, Homer Earl Roberts and Bearl Roberts of Holdenville, Oklahoma, sister of Holdenville, brother James Homer Roberts of Oklahoma City, and grandson, Thomas C. Bankston of Houston.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Gene C. Bankston of Spring, Texas; son Ronald G. Bankston and wife Dana Bankston and step-grandchildren, Adam Maloney and Hannah Maloney, all of Houston; daughter Karen Scott and husband Allan Scott, both of Spring, Texas; granddaughter Laura Bankston Kelleher and husband Brian Kelleher, and great-grandchildren Phillip Brian Kelleher and Natalie Rose Kelleher, all of Houston; grandson Keith Allan Scott of Galveston, Texas; and sister Virginia Fennell of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family wishes to thank the caring individuals at The Village at Gleannloch Farms and Methodist Hospital Willowbrook for their kindness.
Mrs. Bankston was a graceful, gentle, kind-spirited, and loving person who set a wonderful example for others.
She was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
Mrs. Bankston's family would like for you to join them at her visitation on Friday, April 12, 2013, from 4-6 P.M. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay St. Houston, Tx. 77024.
Mrs. Bankston's family would have gathered for a private burial prior to her memorial services at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
