God, in his infinite mercy, looked down on the suffering frame of his child and decided that she had borne her affections long enough. On Monday, March 10, 2008 at 8:25 a.m., Mrs. Gertrude Evelyn Bankhead entered into eternal rest. Gertrude was born October 10, 1923 in Farmville, Virginia to Bessie and Clem Jones, Gert, as she was affectionately called by loved ones and family, was the youngest of ten children.
Gertrude left Virginia in 1936 at age thirteen and moved to Baltimore, Md. with her mother and two older brothers. Gertrude attended Dunbar Senior High School of Baltimore City Public Schools. From a young age Gertrude wanted to help others and participated in various clubs and organizations. Gertrude was a lifetime member of the N.A.A.C.P. In her youth Gertrude worked at Sears and Roebuck and Bethlehem Steel Company.
On September 5, 1948 Gertrude was married to the late Loundreow A.Bankhead, and to this union one beloved child was born, their daughter Brenda Elaine Bankhead. Gertrude joined Mt.Pleasant Baptist Church in Baltimore where she a member for twenty years. Gertrude was a fun-loving, free-spirited person who enjoyed activities such as dancing, traveling, picking fruits and vegetables and entertaining her family and friends. Gert also had a great love for music especially Jazz, Blues, and Country.
On any given day if you were looking for Gert, you wouldn't have to look any further than the kitchen. Gert loved to cook and could be found making some of her favorites like potato salad, yams and chicken.
Gertrude leaves to cherish her memory; one daughter, Brenda E. Bankhead Chambers of Pikesville, Md.; two granddaughters, Robyn N.Chambers-Davis of Suwanee, Ga., Ravyn N.Chambers of Pikesville, Md.; one grandson, BrentE.Chambers of Phoenix, AZ., two great-grandchildren, Lark N.Davis and Trent E.Davis of Suwanee; one sister, Elliner A.Garner of Patterson, NJ; one sistet-in-law, Elvira Jones of Baltimore, Md.; one nephew whom she adored, Ernest E.Suber Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; one grandson by marriage Hooker D.Davis of Suwanee, Ga. And a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Family and friends may view at the March Funeral Home, 1101 E.North Ave. on Friday, March 14, 2008 from 8:00am-8:00pm
Family will receive friends before the service on Saturday, March 15, 2008
