Daughter of Samuel B. Hensley and Susan Davis, Susan Ann Hensley married James Ballard on 30 Jan 1855 in Osage County, MO; Susan Davis is reportedly a great granddaughter of Rebecca and Daniel Boone. The Ballard family lived in Osage County where James farmed until sometime after 1870. The family then moved westward through Nebraska and on to the state of WA. Their daughter, Ida V Ballard, remained in MO, and married David Luster Haynes. Susan Ballard reported on the 1910 census that she had 11 children and that one was living. This one child was Katie (Ballard) Ransom Morgan. The following list of children was provided by a Ballard descendant and does not necessarily compare with census records: America L., Ida V., Walter, James Lyon, twins, James Clay, Charles Drake, Katherine Geneva, Mary Ann, and "Hestor."

Why Susan Ballard's granddaughter, Mary Haynes, was not mentioned in Ballard's 1918 obituary remains a mystery. However, the fact that Ida V. Ballard, mother of Mary, was daughter of James M. and Susan Ballard was documented on the Ballard family record. This record from the family Bible was provided to Jane Denny by Ballard descendant, Gloria Hitt: Ida V. Ballard, born 23 March 1858, died 4 January 1882, was the second child born to James and Susan (Hensley) Ballard.
