Alma Katherine Rose Ball, 88, of the Combs Ridge section of Council, died Thursday, January 20, 2011 in a Kingsport, TN hospital.

Born August 26, 1922 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Flenders and Louisa Jackson Rose.

A lifelong resident of the Council area, she was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Council. She was a 1941 graduate of Oak Hill Academy at Mouth of Wilson, attended Arkansas State Teacher College from 1964-1966, graduated from Pikeville College in 1967 and had attended University of Tennessee correspondence courses. She was certified to teach grades 1-7 and later received her degree from Pikeville College in special education and guidance counseling. She began her teaching career in 1943, first at Combs Ridge School, from 1943-1945 and 1961-1963, Indian Creek from 1964-1966, Council Elementary on the hill from 1966-1978 and 1978-1991 at Council High School. She retired as guidance counselor in 1991 from Council High School. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Moses Ball; one brother, Earl Rose; and one great-granddaughter, Haley Rose Mister.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Ann Quarry and husband, Gene, of Goodyear, AZ and Linda Griffith and husband, Johnny, of Tazewell; two sons, Moses Ball, Jr. and wife, Patricia, of Port St. Lucy, FL and Mike Ball and wife, Emily, of Council; eight grandchildren, Randy Ball, Melissa Mister, Todd Pioch, Tammy Pioch, Blaine Sheckler, Jr., Selenia Meade, Jessica Sheckler and Bridget Ball; six great-grandchildren, Avary Mister, Rylie Mister, Nick Sheckler, Landon Sheckler, Zoee Meade and Isaac Meade.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday in Honaker with the Rev. J.C. Steele officiating. Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
Pallbearers were Randy Ball, Todd Pioch, Blaine Sheckler, Jr., Nick Sheckler, Landon Sheckler, Scott Meade, T.J. Moritz, Danny L. Honaker and John Griffith.
Honorary pallbearers were Carlos Combs and Lonnie Mister.
