Lina Mae (the middle name is misspelled on the gravestone) was born in St. Michaels, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore. As a young woman, she taught school in Talbot County for a while, before marrying Walter A. Ross of Baltimore. She was then 28, an unusually advanced age for a first marriage at that time. The Rosses had three daughters, Louise, Hilda, and Elinor. Louise died after her frilly party dress caught fire from a candle on her 10th birthday cake. The family then relocated to Charlottesville, Va., where Walter worked For several drugstores. He and a partner opened their own drugstore on Main Street in Charlottesville, but it failed in the Depression and the men lost everything. Walter and Lina ended up renting in a house on Park Street in Charlottesville until they moved in with their son-in-law and daughter, Charles E. and Elinor Crawford. Lina outlived Walter by 15 years.
