NILES - Mr. Edward Lawrence Baker, 61, formerly of Niles, Michigan, beloved father, grandfather, son and brother, who resided in Abilene, Texas, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2009, in the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center, Amarillo, Texas. Edward was born to the union of George Andrew and Myrna Isabell (Lawrence) Baker on January 19, 1948, in Niles, Michigan. He graduated from Niles High School in 1966. While at Niles High School he played the baritone saxophone in the marching band. He attended one year of college from 1966 to 1967 at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. He was drafted into the United States Army on January 25, 1968, and was honorably discharged on February 3, 1970. In 1972 he was united in holy matrimony to Patricia Terrell in Berrien Springs, Michigan, and from this union one child was born, Jonathan Baker. Edward's work history included bindery work with Simplicity Pattern in Niles, and he was a lineman for the I&M Electric Company in Buchanan, Michigan, for several years. He was a former member of the Niles Seventh-day Adventist Church. In 1982 he moved to Texas. Edward loved to fish and was a coin collector. Edward was preceded in death by his father, George Andrew Baker, and a son, Sam Mitchell. Survivors left to cherish his memory include one daughter, Hope Dunifin (Peter) Anderson of Vandalia, Michigan; one son, Jonathan Baker of Miami, Florida; his mother, Myrna Isabell McClain of Niles, Michigan; three grandchildren, Paige, Christen and Payton Anderson, all of Vandalia, Michigan; two sisters, Myrna (Delbert) Hunt of Niles and Karen Alford of South Bend, Indiana; two brothers, George C. (Marilyn) Baker and Gregory (Diane) Baker, both of Niles, Michigan; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Edward Lawrence Baker will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24th, in Alford's Mortuary, with burial following at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Viewing will occur one hour prior to services in the chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary where bereavement messages may be e-mailed to [email protected], c/o the Edward Baker family.
