Services for Rev. Dr. Ralph Baker, 83, Spirit Lake, were 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 1990, at the United Methodist Church, Spirit Lake. Rev. Merlin Ackerson, Rev. John J. Oren and Rev. Henrietta Klarenbeck officiated. The culogy was given by Merlin Baker and Karen Norton. Music was provided by Margery Rhodes, organist, and Cynthia and Amy Baker sang "I'll Fly Away." The congregation sang "lead on O King Eternal," and "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee." Pallbearers were Howard Helden, James Bell, Dr. K.L. Clayton, Donald Gregerson, Blaine Hoien and Wayne Northey.

Mr. Baker died Sunday, Jan. 14, after failing health for the past four years.

He was born May 12, 1906, to Roscoe and Martha (Whitney) Baker in Britt. He graduated from Morningside College, Sioux City with bachelor of arts and a doctorate of divinity degrees. He attended Garrett-Evangeliacl Theological Seminary at Evanston, ILL. and received a bacholor of divinity.

He married Chalice Moore in Sioux City Jan. 17, 1933.

Rev. Baker served as a minister of the gospel for the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church for more than 35 years, serving churches in Woden, Inwood, Gowrie, Spirit Lake, Hampton, Marion, Storm Lake and Clinton. He enjoyed all aspects of the ministry and the opportunity to be of service to all kinds and conditions of people.

During his retirement years in Spirit Lake, he developed his hobbies of carpentry, woodworking, and nature study. The couple traveled throughout the United States and spent several months each year with their son in Alabama. The couple would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary Jan. 17.

Survivors include his wife, Chalice; one son, Merlin Ralph and his wife Diana, Enterprise, Ala.; one daughter Karen Ruth Norton, Syracuse, N.Y.; grandchildren, Cynthia, Amy and Brian Baker, Enterprise, Ala.; four brothers, Maurice, Clarion, Merle, Lincoln, ILL.; Ross, Brookinds, S.D., and Laurel and his wife Kathy Johnson, Milford; and one sister, Rachel Lamorcaux, Fremont, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Burial was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Spirit Lake. Turner Funeral Home, Spirit Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
