In 1929, she married Harvey Baker Gauweiler. Bea worked at several downtown Cadillac stores in her early years. That retail experience helped her when she and her husband purchased Harvey's Market on Chestnut Street in Cadillac. She ran the business for more than 27 years, working 12 hour days. The store became a hangout for neighborhood kids and a favorite lunch spot for high schoolers. She always had a listening ear, giving advice, sharing her life experiences and helping people through different trials in their life. In 1980,
Bea sold the store and eventually moved into Harborview Apartments, where she stayed until about a year ago, when she moved to Lakeview Lutheran Manor.
She served on the Council and several committees at Harborview, organizing birthday parties, luncheons, and holiday festivities. Her apartment was always lit up with lights and decorations at Christmas, her favorite time of year. She attended Cadillac United Methodist Church and loved getting visits from the youth groups, members and the pastoral staff. The weekly sermons on tape were a blessing to her.
Bea will be missed by her beloved daughter, Phyllis Cornell, her grandchildren, Jim (Rebecca) Hagberg of Lansing and Penny (Mike) Jenema of Cadillac, great-granddaughter, Sara (Joe) Clugston of Cadillac and great-great grandson, Camden Clugston. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Virginia Griffin of Cadillac, good friend, Bob Thalman and several nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, her parents, her siblings and her son-in-law, Pete Cornell.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday at the funeral home.
