Fred served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on F-5A #42-12983, 17th Photographic Squadron, 4th Reconnaissance Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in St. Clair County, Michigan prior to the war.

Fred took off from Fighter 2 (Kukum Field), Guadalcanal Province, Solomon Islands on a solo photographic and visual search over Kahili Airfield (Buin Airfield), Bougainville Province, Papua New Guinea. After takeoff he was not seen or heard from again.

Fred was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
