Hannibal, MO - Wanda Bailey Smashey Mitchell, 86, of Hannibal, died at 2:28 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at her home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at the Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal. Pastor Mark Burkey will officiate. Burial will follow at the Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal. Visitation will be on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service at the Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal. Mrs. Mitchell was born on Feb. 10, 1923, in Spencerburg, Mo., the daughter of James Neal Bailey and Bessie Tippett Bailey. She married Richard Eugene Smashey on Oct. 5, 1946. She later married Sheldon Albert Mitchell on Sept. 30, 1967. They both preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, James T. "Jim" (Carrie) Smashey and Richard E. "Rich" Smashey Jr., both of Hannibal; her stepson, David (Harlene) Mitchell of Hannibal; her sister, Mary Ruth Smith of Peoria, Ill.; her grandchildren, James M. (Amy) Smashey of Benton, Ark., Susan Nicole Smashey, Kaci Lynn Shepherd, Tracy (Bob) Borgmeyer, all of Hannibal, Troy (Melanie) Mitchell of Lillington, N.C.; and a step-grandchild, Brehton Zumwalt of Benton, Ark. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Caleb Matthew Smashey, Zildjian Rhiann Smashey-Larsen, McKayla Lynn Shepherd, Jonathan (Amber) Borgmeyer, Joshua (Sydney) Borgmeyer, and Jacob Borgmeyer, all of Hannibal, and Morgan Mitchell and Vance Mitchell of Lillington, N.C.; and several beloved nieces and a nephew. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jim Reed Bailey, who was killed in Italy during WWII. Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Monroe City High School and attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Ill. She worked for KHQA-TV, hosting the "Studio 7" show for approximately 20 years. She also co-hosted the "7 Spotlight" show on Sunday mornings. She retired from KHQA-TV on Dec. 15, 2007, after almost 50 years, as the Hannibal Public Affairs Director. She and Gene Smashey owned and operated the Hannibal Appliance Store for several years during the 1960's. She has served for many years on the Salvation Army Board. She was an ambassador for the Hannibal Chamber of Commerce and served on the Chamber Board. In 2008 she received the Chamber's Pacesetter Award. She served on the United Way Board and the Hannibal-LaGrange College Advisory Board. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Association and the Hannibal Arts Council. She was a very active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Hannibal. She has been a life-long area resident. Pallbearers will be George Lee, Bert Hayes, James M. Smashey, Jonathan Borgmeyer, Joshua Borgmeyer and Jacob Borgmeyer. Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce Battle, Mark Epperson, Scott Anderson, Troy Mitchell, Kent Miller, Dan Campbell, Alan Sherman and John Cernea. Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army in care of Grand View Funeral Home.
