LEXINGTON - Services for Wilbur Gregory "Bill" Bailey, 80, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2001 at Red Bank United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Jimmy Harper. Pallbearers will be Scott Simons, Damon Padgett, Kirk Sharpe, Johnny Bailey, Dewey Clark and Henry Clark. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Bible Class. The family will receive friends from 6-8 this evening, June 8, 2001 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Red Bank United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Mr. Bailey died Thursday, June 7, 2001. Born in Lexington County, March 13, 1921, he was a son of the late John C. and Ella Gregory Bailey. He was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church, Men's Bible Class and Methodist Men's Club. He was past secretary of the Men's Bible Class, Chairman of the Trustees, usher and past member of the Building Committee. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was self-employed for many years and retired from Lexington Medical Engineering Services as a cabinet maker in 1989. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with Company B, 98th Signal Battalion as Technician Fifth Grade and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, Distinguished Unit Badge and the American Theater Ribbon Medal for his service in the Pacific. He also served in the Army National Guard.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Georgie Clark Bailey; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Laverne Simons, Gayle and Larry Padgett and Sheila and Bob Barrier, all of Lexington; sister, Kathleen Rowan of Summerville; grandchildren, Scott Simons, Jill Sharpe, Lea Simons, Nancy Padgett, Damon Padgett, Barbi Barrier and Blair Barrier; great-grandchildren, Madeline Simons, Colt and Colby Sharpe. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by brothers, Roy, Cecil and Leon Bailey and sisters, Marie Fields and Jennie Dooley.
