Subject: Higgins Family of Coweta / Meriwether County Georgia
Post Date: May 30, 2003

Hello, I am a descendant of the Higgins family that settled in what was originally Coweta County Georgia but also later became Meriwether County as well. My name is Strickland, but my great grandmothers maiden name was Higgins. She had 2 sisters and 2 brothers. I have been looking for the ancestor of their family whom I know must have come to GA. from Laurens, SC. I know this because I have been to the graves of the first Higgins in Coweta, Newton Higgins and his wife "Dicey" Bailey. His headstone has it that he was from Laurens County , SC. It is a very old headstone, so it is not a farce. I am looking for his parents, grandparents, and so on. They had many children, both sons and daughters who had large families of their own. Many of their offspring scattered across GA (especially North GA), as well as to Alabama...... and no telling where else. I have the line of Higgins descendancy from Newton and Dicey. The Higgins Family I am descended from, it may please you to know....were all literate, wore shoes, attended school as children, were resourceful and well-landed, owned mercantile stores, smithies, small houses they rented out, and sawmills as well as being farmers. They were first to have electricity in their area, and were well respected in the communities they dwelled within. They also fought for the Confederacy, and several died or were wounded in the fighting. A few associated familes(names) were : Strickland, Elmore, McCrary, Spence, Bailey, Todd, Keith, Walker....and many others. If you think you may be related to any of these, or know something of them......please exchange information with me. I am as eager to trace my roots on their line as any of you.

Dia is Muire duit... (God and Mary be with you),

Chris Strickland

Father of Dicy was named Elisha or Elijah Bailey, from Laurens county SC. The Bailey and Higgins families were neighbors there from the 1770s through the American Revolution to 1840 in the census and land records. When her husband Newton Higgins died in 1842, he was in debt. Dicy along with two sons and a daughter moved to Coweta County, GA in 1843. They had gotten a small tract of land through the state lottery. They settled near Senoia.
