Jonathan Bailey was born June 28, 1832 on the family farm in Champaign County, Ohio. He died August 24, 1863 at Helena Arkansas. He is the son of David Charles Bailey and Rhoda Daniels Bailey.

Jonathan Bailey married Laura Lyons September 18, 1859 in Marion, Grant County, Wisconsin. They had one child, William J. Bailey, born March 6, 1863 in Grant County, Wisconsin.

Jonathan served in the Civil War in Co E, 25th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, as a corporal. Died from disease.

Research records show that Jonathan died at Helena, Arkansas and was buried in "plot #39 in a cemetery near the Mississippi River". In error I created his memorial in the Helena National Cemetery, where only Confederate soldiers are buried, this being the only cemetery in Phillips County near the river. Jonathan actually was buried there, and later moved to the Mississippi River National Cemetery, Tennessee.

On page 250, under "Union Soldiers Interred in Mississippi River National Cemetery, Tenn. " there is this entry:
