Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Monday, March 8, 1965:
   Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. for Albert L. Backs, a retired farmer, at Zion Lutheran Church in Carpenter.  Mr. Backs, 69 years old, died Sunday at 5:40 a.m. at Alton Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient five days.  He resided on Route 2, Edwardsville.
   A native of Carpenter, he was born July 5, 1895 the son of Henry and Emma Stahlhut Backs.
   Survivors include his wife, the former Elizabeth Franke whom he married Oct. 23, 1921; and a brother, Harry F. Backs of Route 2.  Three brothers preceded him in death.
   Mr. Backs was a member of Zion Church and World War I Veterans Barracks 977.
   Friends may call at the Weber Funeral Home until 11 a.m. Tuesday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until the service.  Members of the WWI Barracks will call in a group this evening at 7:30 at the funeral home.
   The Rev. A.J. Weber will officiate at the final rites with burial in the church cemetery.  Casketbearers will be the deceased's nephews: Roy Franke, Gene Franke, Junior Gueldener, Donald Stahlhut, Wilbur Barnard Jr., Charles Pape.
