Dale Roy Backman

Feb. 2, 1949 – Dec. 15, 2015

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Dale Roy Backman, 66, of Coquille, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road in Coos Bay, with pastor Jon Strasman presiding. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall. Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.

Dale was born Feb. 2, 1949, in Coquille. He was the second of five siblings born to Albert Nels Backman and Dorothy Margaret (Furgason) Backman. He passed away Dec. 15, 2015, in Coquille.

Dale lived in the Coquille area all of his life. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, participating in the youth group gathering with Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where he met and later married Bette Nissen. He graduated from Coquille High School, Class of 1968. He was a Boy Scout, and an U.S. Marine. Following a tour of duty in Vietnam, he returned home and married Bette and they had their only child, a son named Edward Albert. They lived in the Fairview four corners area outside Coquille for 42 years.

Dale was a member of the Oregon National Guard. He was a hunter and fisherman, patiently teaching Ed how to hunt, fish, play golf, operate mowers and other yard care equipment. For years Dale and Ed mowed and took care of the Fairview Veterans Memorial Cemetery just up the road from his home. Dale worked at many wood products mills in Coos County, and during layoffs he would work in the hay fields or local gas stations. Like his siblings, Dale was "a rolling stone in motion gathering no moss." He retired from Les Schwab Company truck stop after 26 years. He was a member of the Vintage Haulers truck club with a '64 El Camino and '23 T Bucket, through the years owned many, many vehicles from Corvettes, Jeeps and even a VW Bug. Dale was always there to help when called by a neighbor or friend. In retirement he started making walking sticks, giving them to those in need for a hug or handshake, getting requests from old friends for a "stick" engraved with the recipient's military service, who lived in other states across the United States and selling a few as well.

Dale left a giant hole of willingness to help others in our world so we all need to step up and try to fill it, remembering it's by God's grace that we live. It would be greatly appreciated by Dale's family if those in possession of one of Dale's walking sticks could bring it along with them to the celebration service to honor him.

Dale is survived by his wife of 44 years, Bette Backman of Coquille; son, Ed Backman of Coquille; mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Bob Taylor; sister, Juanita Backman; brother, Douglas Backman and his wife, Sharon; brother, Dennis Backman and his wife, Teresa all of Coquille; brother, Daniel Backman and his wife, Linda of Brookings; brother-in-law, Bruce Nissen of Portland; sister-in-law, Christine Huffman and her husband, Michael Sr. of Coos Bay; sister-in-law, Heidi Nissen of Astoria; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and one great-great-niece.

Dale was preceded in death by his father, Albert Nels Backman; mother-in-law, Saima Eleanor (Etelamaki) Nissen; father-in-law, Edward Adolph Nissen; and his grandparents.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Dale's honor to Vets Helping Vets HQ, VHVHQ, P.O.
