Backes Rites in Miles City
Katherine Alice Backes, 91, resident of Custer County Rest home for the past 5 years, died May 29 at the rest home.
She was born Dec. 27, 1883 at Buffalo, Minn., the daughter of John and Katherine Mullen and was one of a family of 13.
She was married to Bernard Backes Nov. 8, 1909 at Mohall, N.D.
They homesteaded at Richland County in 1910 and continued to ranch and farm near Lambert.
Mr. Backes passed away in 1954 at Lambert. In 1968, Mrs. Backes moved to Miles City and has lived at the Custer County Rest Home since 1970.
She was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Lamber.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Patrick (Katherine) Shevlin of Miles City; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Marie Anne Backes of Lambert; nine grandchildren, including John and James Shevlin and Mrs. Ray Ketterling of Miles City; 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Winkes of Arlington, Wash.; many nephews and nieces, including Mrs. Eugene Bankey of Miles City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons in infancy, and a son, Otto.
Funeral mass was June 2 at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa's Catholic Church at Lambert. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Sunday evening at St. Theresa's. Burial was at St. Theresa's Catholic Cemetery in Lambert.
Arrangements were under the direction of Stevenson's Miles City Funeral Home.
