Paul James Babinate, 75, of Sioux City died Sunday May 13, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Valerie Heller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Paul was born Aug. 14, 1931, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the adopted son of Will and Carrie (Slatinka) Babinat. After the death of Carrie, he was raised by James and Anna (Slatinka) Cech. He was raised in the Grundy Center, Iowa area. He graduated from high school while serving in the U.S. Army in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1950.
He married his first wife, Elaine White, in March 1951. She passed away July 31, 1981. In 1983, he met and married Minda De Bey. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 30 years.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 615, Shriner Campers, Sioux City Amateur Radio Club, Retired Letter Carriers, Civil Defense for many years and Lutheran Social Services as a help mate. He also was active in A.A. He loved his family, the ham radio, the Shriners and loved being the caregiver of his wife for many years. He will be remembered as a great photographer for the Shriners.
Survivors include his wife, Minda Babinate of Sioux City; a daughter, Gale and Richard Newton of Sioux City; a sister, Martha and Ed Freeze of Grundy Center, Iowa; a brother, James Cech Jr. of Winter Park, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Jeanette De Bey of Rock Valley, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mary and Roy Kanwit of Spencertown, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Earl and Mary Ann De Bey of Rock Valley, Iowa, and Paul and Karmin De Bey of Leawood, Kan.; four grandchildren, Mark Morey, Quanda Hanshaw, Andrew Bollin, & Missy Goodvin; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elaine Mae Babinate; a daughter, Linda Elaine Bradham; his parents; his father-in-law, Tony De Bey; his son-in-law, Bill Goodvin, and a brother-in-law, Galen De Bey.
