Clayton D. Axtell, 84, of 1119 Chestnut Street, died at 9:32 am today in his home following a three month illness. He was born in Sheakleyville Oct. 7, 1889, son of George L. and Flora Caldwell Axtell.

He spent his early life in Sugarcreek and Wyattville area, attending school there. For 26 years he worked for John Wenzel in his grocery store on 13th Street, and for 15 years worked at Joseph Schiffer Market on 13th, a clerk in both stores. He had retired a number of years.

He was a veteran of World War I, serving with Supply Co., 314th Field Artillery, 80th Division, in France, taking part in the St. Mihiel and Argonne-Meus offensives. He entered service in April 1918 and was discharges in June 1919. He was a member of Franklin Post 476, American Legion, and attended the First Free Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, former Mary Strawbridge, whom he married Oct. 13, 1934 in Franklin; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Krepp of Franklin, Ruth M. Axtell of South Pasadena, CA; and one brother, Samuel D. Axtell of Bradford. A brother, Fred, is deceased.
