Albion John Avery, 96, of Leonardville, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at Clay County Medical Center in Clay Center.

Family members provided the following information.

He was born April 14, 1912, on the family farm southwest of Riley, Kansas, the son of Albion John and Hilda Mary (Clark) Avery.

Albion farmed the family farm until 1966, when the family was displaced by the expansion of Fort Riley. They then moved to a farm near Barnes, Kansas and farmed until retiring in 2003 at the age of 91, and then moved to Leonardville.

He was a member of the Leonardville United Methodist Church, the Gideons International, had been a 4-H Leader of the Magic 4-H Club, and had been active in the Riley County Farm Bureau.

He was married to Grace Elverra Myers on July 23, 1938; she preceded him in death on Oct. 27, 1991. He married Pearl Louise (Tague) Thurlow on Sept. 24, 1992, she preceded him in death on June 29, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Ruth Hammett, Esther Visser and Ethel Griffing.

He is survived by three daughters, Jonne Lesly Long of Kansas City, Mo., Cheri Lane Black and husband Toney of Philadelphia, Pa. and Kristie "Kriss" Lou Avery and husband Jim Rothwell of Saint Ann, Mo.; four grandchildren, Dayna Knight and husband Chad of Salt Lake City, Utah, Shombi Sharp and wife Sarah Watterson of Moscow, Russia, Russhain Black and O'Shane Black both of Philadelphia, Pa.; four great-grandchildren, Kaycie and Derek Knight, Avery and Annika Sharp.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Leonardville United Methodist Church in Leonardville, with Rev. Sharlan and Rev. Michael Graber officiating. Respect calls may be made anytime Friday at the Holmes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery in Wakefield.

A memorial has been established for the Leonardville Nursing Home.
