He served in the military as a private in the 161st Infantry, 41st Division, from 1917 to 1919.

J. A. Avery [sic - Thomas' father's name was J. A. Avery] Dies At Gordon Home

Brother of Macon Woman was Gassed in World War

J. A. Avery [sic]. 39 [sic]. World war veteran of Gordon and brother of Mrs. B. L. Bonner of Macon died yesterday morning at his home there following a long illness.

Mr. Avery was gassed in France and had been under treatment at the veterans' hospital in Atlanta intermittently since that time.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Hardy's chapel at Gordon with burial following in the chapel grounds. The Rev. H. O. Fulford, pastor, will be in charge.

Other survivors include his wife, Mrs. Carrie Avery; three brothers, Frank, J. N., and Willard Avery, all of Gordon; sisters, Mrs. A. E. Browne, Williamsburg, and Mrs. B. B. Kennington, Gordon.

The Macon sister, Mrs. Bonner, lives at 405 Church street.
