Martha Ann Phillips Austin, 77, of Springfield died Friday, June
21, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Friars Point, Miss., the daughter of Louis and
Ellen Jane Phillips. She married Monque Austin in 1943 in Mississippi; he died
in 1996. Two sons, John Henry and Myron Austin, and a daughter, Evelenor Austin,
also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Austin worked at Memorial Medical Center for many years, retiring in 1972.
She was a past member of Old Antioch Baptist Church in Sumner, Miss., and St.
Clair Missionary Baptist Church in Lyons, Miss. She was a member of Union
Baptist Church.

Survivors: three sons, John Allen (wife, Ida Mae) Madden of Lyons, Miss., Monque
Jr. (wife, Dorothy) and Alfred L. (wife, Mable) Austin, both of Springfield;
three daughters, Jessie Austin of Springfield, Martha (husband, Roscoe) Blountt
and Dorothy Townsell, both of Clarksdale, Miss.; 17 grandchildren; 36
great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, James and
Tommie Lee (wife, Liz) Phillips, both of St. Louis; four sisters, Mildred
Washington of Centerville, Ann Ward, Veouis Page and Rosie Lee Brooks, all of
Clarksdale, Miss.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services: noon Friday, Union Baptist Church, the Rev. Daimorrio Hubbard Sr.
officiating.

James D. Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
