She died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000.
She was born Aug. 17, 1925, in Bay City and was a direct descendent of Stephen F. Austin. She married Charles A. Sterns on July 1, 1957, in Plainview. He preceded her in death. She married Richard E. Orr on May 12, 1984, in Midland.
She graduated magna cum laude from Wayland Baptist University on Aug. 22, 1975 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. She worked as a probation officer for the 64th and the 242nd Judicial District Adult Probation Department from Jan. 2, 1967, until her retirement as director of the department on Sept. 30, 1990.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Edmonson.
She was a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Texas Corrections Association, Eta Theta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta and Texas Alpha Eta Chapter of Alpha Chi. She also served on the criminal justice committee of the South Plains Association of Governments.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Thomas A. Sterns of Hale Center and Kelly Colson of Quakertown, Pa.; a daughter, Jeanine Kay Heckathorn of Springdale, Ark.; a stepdaughter, Sherry Parish of Louisville, Ky.; a stepson, Steve Orr of Southaven, Miss.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, the Plainview Humane Society or a favorite charity.
