Robert was the eldest child of ten and eldest son of four boys born to William Thompson Austin and Louisa Peck Easley.
Robert married Mary Hattie Jeffreys, the daughter of William Mitchell Moody and Orlena E Moody Jeffreys Smith, married 28 July 1869 in Grainger, Tennessee and they had the following children:

* Lula Elizabeth Austin Ingram 1872–1910
* Addie Lee Austin 1874-1876
* William Thompson Austin 1876–1978
* James Franklin Austin 1878–1964
* Frederick Clisbe Austin 1881–1952
* Mary Hattie Austin 1884–1957
Mary died in Grainger County 1887 and Robert remarried to Nancy Scott Fudge of Virginia on 11 April 1888 in Grainger County. They had the following children:

* Easley Fudge Austin 1892–1980
* Jennie E. Austin 1897–1967
