Adam J. (Clark) Augustine, 92, of Nanticoke, passed away early Tuesday morning, September 7, 2010, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. His loving and adoring wife is the former Johanna Kurtz. Together.

Adam and Johanna shared 59 beautiful years of marriage. True soul mates, the couple had a tremendous and enduring love for one another. Born on September 1, 1918, in Alden Station (Newport Township), Adam was a son of the late John and Aniela (Podrazik) Augustine. Adam was raised in Alden Station, where he attended Alden schools and the former Saint Mary's Parish Grade School. Adam was a graduate of the former Newport Township High School, class of 1935.

He later went on to further his education at the Delehanty Institute of New York and was a graduate of the New York City Police Academy. A U.S. Army Veteran, Adam honorably served his country for four and a half years during World War II. Prior to his retirement on August 31, 1981, Adam was employed as a patrolman for the New York City Police Department, where he admirably served for 35 years. A faithful and devout Catholic, Adam was a member of Saint Faustina Parish, Nanticoke. Prior to his membership at Saint Faustina Parish, Adam was a member of the former Saint Joseph Slovak Church of Nanticoke. Adam was a life member of the Patrolman's Benevolent Association of the New York City Police Department and also held life membership in the Pulaski Association of the New York City Police Department. Additionally, Adam was a life member of the Civil Service Retired Employees Association. A proud veteran, Adam was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 290, of Nanticoke and also the American Legion, Post 350, of Nanticoke.

In addition to his parents, John and Aniela Augustine, Adam was also preceded in death by his beloved son, Lloyd Augustine, who passed away on December 22, 1976; his stepmother and aunt, Anna Podrazik Augustine; his brothers, Louis Augustine and Alex Augustine; and his sister, Emily Hopkins.

In addition to his loving wife, Johanna, Adam is also survived by his brothers, Stanley Augustine of Florida; Leo Augustine, of Birmingham, AL; Edward Augustine of Carteret, NJ; his sister, Genevieve Cyrana of Metuchen, NJ; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The Funeral for Mr. Adam J. Augustine will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from the Grontkowski Funeral Home P.C., 51-53 W. Green St., Nanticoke, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. in Saint Faustina Parish, Saint Mary of Czestochowa Church, 1030 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. James R. Nash, his Pastor, officiating. Entombment with the Rite of Committal will follow at the Augustine Family Mausoleum in Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Nanticoke, where Military Honors will be accorded by members of the American Legion, Post 350, of Nanticoke. Family and friends are invited to call on this evening from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.
