Mary's birth name was Maria Dewald. She was born in Baldwin Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jacob Dewald and Catherine Dewald (nee Keim). She and her brothers used the spelling Dewalt. She married Charles W. Augenstein in 1881. To them were born these children: Jacob William (1882-1955); Harry Heinrich (1884-1915); George Frederick (1886-1958); Edward Benjamin (1891-1966); Benjamin Albert (1891-1956); Amanda Louise (1893-1967) married Jacob Gebhardt; Elizabeth Margaret (1896-1982) married first Clyde Cable, second Charles Messner; Charles Elmer (1904-1982).

Obituary, Pittsburgh Gazette, Nov 14 1940:
MRS. MARY AUGENSTEIN. Mrs. Mary Dewalt Augenstein, 81, died yesterday at her home in Hamilton road, Castle Shannon. A native of the section of Baldwin township now known as Castle Shannon, she had been a resident of the community all her life. Mrs. Augenstein was a member of the Emmanual Lutheran Church of Castle Shannon. She leaves five sons, Jacob W., George F., Edward B., Benjamin A. and Charles E. Augenstein; two daughters, Mrs. Amanda L. Gebhardt and Mrs. Elizabeh Messner; 10 grandchilden, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o`clock at the Laughlin Funeral Home, Castle Shannon, with burial at the Zion cemetery.

Buried Nov 15 1940, Zion Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA, beside husband who is on her left.
