Julia S. Aubrey, a longtime resident of Shawnee, passed away Monday, Sept. 10, in Okmulgee at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 14 days.

Julia was born on Feb. 26, 1914, in Tennessee to Julia (Spencer) Owens and James Newton Owens. Julia grew up in Shawnee and attended Oklahoma Baptist University where she received her bachelors degree. She later received her masters degree at Peabody College near Vanderbilt University. Following college Julia began teaching and was a long-time teacher of Latin. She retired from teaching in Kentucky after teaching in several places in the United States and abroad.

Julia married Dan Aubrey in Shawnee. Julia and Dan lived mostly in Kentucky and later in Florida until Dan's death. Afterwards, Julia returned to Shawnee where she lived next door to her sister, Jane Zumwalt. Julia was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shawnee.

Julia loved to travel and her energy level and zeal for experiencing and seeing the world was an inspiration to all who met her. She enjoyed the many cultural experiences from her world travels and her home was a reflection of the many joys of her extensive travels.

An avid reader and letter writer, Julia's communications were always colorful, thoughtful and perfectly timed.

Julia was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Aubrey; both her mother and her father; two brothers, Dr. J.N. Owens Jr. and Dr. John Joseph Owens; and two sisters-in-law, Jean Owens and Lula Owens.

A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church of Shawnee. The family has designated the First Baptist Church of Shawnee as appropriate for memorial contributions.

Services are under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home of Okmulgee.
