A native of the Yancey County, Pensacola Community, Mrs.
Airheart was born on July 3, 1920.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Monroe Atkins and Bertha Haynie Atkins of Yancey County, and by bothers, Edgar E. and Thomas E. Atkins.
Mrs. Airheart was educated in the Yancey County Public School system which nurtured her lifelong commitment to public education. She graduated in 1941 from Asheville Teachers College with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education which was followed with a Masters degree in education from The North Carolina College for Women (now the University of North Carolina---Greensboro).
Mrs. Airheart began her teaching career in 1941 with the Yancey County Public Schools as an elementary teacher at South Toe, and as a teacher and principal at Pensacola Elementary School. In 1956, Mrs. Airheart left Yancey County to accept teaching and principal positions with the United States Military Dependents School where her teaching profession would take her to military bases in France, Korea and Germany. Following her assignment to Okinawa, she met her husband, U.S. Marine Corps Officer Col. William C. Airheart, also stationed at this military base. Following their marriage on January 1, 1960, she continued to teach at military bases where her husband was assigned in Virginia, California, and Hawaii. In Honolulu, the Airhearts made their home where Mrs. Airheart retired with the Honolulu Public School system in 1982. Their retirement years were filled with community service, travels, and frequent trips home to visit family and friends in Yancey County.
Mrs. Airheart is survived by her devoted husband, Colonel William C. Airheart, USMC (Ret.) of Mars Hill; her only sister, Virginia Atkins (Ginny) Banks of Burnsville; her brothers, Morris D. Atkins and wife, Cecilia, of Pelzer, S. C.; James M. Atkins of Tacoma, WA.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
