Atkins, Jane Sexton Obit

Age, 85, of McKenzie/Nashville, TN March 15, 2006. Born May 1, 1920, in Murray, KY. Preceded in death by husband, John Wendell Atkins, Jr.; father, Jesse Dudley Sexton; mother, Maude Whitnell Sexton; son-in-law John Proctor; sisters, Ruth Whitnell Sexton & Mary Frances Sexton.

Survived by son John Sexton Atkins and wife, Diana, Nashville, TN; daughter, Nancy Proctor, Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Katie, Clint and Callie Atkins, and Ryan Proctor. She was Director of Music @ Bethel College, 1943=-46; Choir Director & Organist for several years @ McKenzie First United Methodist Church and organist at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, McKenzie. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, McKenzie, TN.

Mrs. Atkins was a graduate of Murrary High School and Murray State College, where she received the degree of Bachelor of Music Education. At Murrary State she was a member of several music organizations, a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, music fraternity for women and Kappa Delta Pi, Honorary education fraternity. She was selected as the outstanding woman graduation senior in the music department.

1941. She received the Mater of Music Degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Cincinnati, OH. She was a member of the Mentor Club of McKenzie and was a former pianist for the McKenzie Rotary Club. Active in the McKenzie Methodist Church, she was an officer in the United Methodist Women for many years. Church Historian and a member of the Administration Board. She was a member of the Memphis Conference Commission on Archives and history and a member of the Board of Directors of the Carroll Arts Organization. Was recently honored by this organization as "Friend of the Acts", June 2003. Resident of the St. Paul Senior Living Community in Nashville since 1999.

Visitation Saturday, March 25, 2006 @ Brummitt Funeral Home, 3-6 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2006, 1-2 p.m. @ First United Methodist Church, Underwood Hall. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2006 at First United Methodist Church McKenzie. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery, McKenzie Memorials, First United Methodist Church, McKenzie or Alive Hospice, Nashville, TN 27203. Brummitt Funeral Home 731-352-222.
