Derusha Gardner Atkins was the biological daughter of Seba Elwyn. Yet, Derusha was adopted by Seba's maternal aunt, Pearl Monroe Gardner, and her husband, George Gardner, in the 1920's. Derusha made this clear in a letter to Pearl's brother DD Monroe in the early 1980's. It's not known who her biological father was. Potentially, it could have been John Walter Grigsby, Seba's first husband, but there's no proof of this.
...............................
In the letter to DD, she writes, "I do not know Seba Lee, my natural mother. I only saw her twice after leaving Mississippi, and did not know then that she was my natural mother. She came thru Drumright in November of 1924 with her small son, Walter. At that time the arrangements were made for my adoption, and at the same time Lee married [John] Walter Grigsby. Several years later, I saw Lee in Pampa, Texas and she had a little girl, Pearl Lenora, and she was still married to Walter. The only time I heard from Lee was after she heard I was married and had Pearl Louise. The letter upset Mother so much and I did not know Lee so I never got around to writing to her.
