February 17, 1967-November 17, 2016

Robert Duane (Bob) Athearn passed away at his home in Burlington at peace unexpectedly on November 17, 2016 at the age of 49.

Bob was born February 17, 1967 at Northwest Hospital in Seattle to parents Robert F. (Bert) and Arlene K. Athearn.

Bob attended grade school at Meridian Grade School in Lynden and Serene Lake Elementary School in Edmonds, Olympic View Middle School in Mukilteo and graduated Burlington-Edison High School class of 1986.

Bob married his high school sweetheart Susan M. Taft in 1990 and together they were proud parents to Katherine M. Athearn and Robert J. Athearn; later divorcing in 2007.

Bob was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes in 1981.

While he suffered many disease related illnesses throughout his lifetime, it did not stop him from living his life to the fullest. Starting at a young age and through middle school Bob participated in Mukilteo Little League.

In 1982, he received the award for athlete of the year at Olympic View Middle School. Bob played varsity BEHS football all 4 years of high school.

In 1986, Bob started working for An-West manufacturing where he made wood furniture and cabinets for 20+ years until the business closed.

While Bob and Susan were dating, Bob was invited to go bowling with Susan's Uncle Roger. It was no surprise to his parents and sister that Bob had inherited his paternal grandmother's love for bowling.

Riverside Lanes became Bob's second home and where you would often see the name BOB ATHEARN Score 300 displayed proudly.

Other hobbies included hunting, watching baseball, spending time with his kids, and hanging out with his many friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother Arlene, his aunt Shirley Bates, his cousins Dennis Wood, David Wood and Patricia Bates.

Bob is survived by his children Katie and Jack Athearn of Burlington, his dad Bert Athearn of Mt. Vernon, his sister, brother in law and nephew Jon, Beth and Nathan Nelson, of Camano Island, Aunts Delores (Terry) Bowser, Lucille Wood and Uncle Don Bates all of Sedro- Woolley. Cousins Cheryl (Dean) Good of Mt. Vernon, Don (Robyn) Bates and Brenda Kroll of Sedro-Woolley, Barbara Shelton, and a long list of friends.

A public memorial service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 1pm at Kerns Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

A private family burial will take place at 11am Saxon Cemetery Acme, WA.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to his children, Jack and Katie. Mail to PO Box 318, Conway, WA 98238, c/o Pam Roth.
